The Daily Brief

EDITION 029MON 14 SEP 2026 · 13:45 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Saudi Arabia shuts the last major bypass around the Strait of Hormuz and Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI all call for an AI slowdown — the live buy roster shrinks to four names as three prior zones break outright and hike odds near 87% ahead of Wednesday's Fed decision.

Drones damaged Saudi Arabia's 750-mile, 7-million-barrel-a-day East-West pipeline to the Red Sea on Thursday, and Riyadh shut it as a precaution over the weekend — removing the main alternative route around the Strait of Hormuz, which the Iran war has already throttled since late February. Brent jumped roughly 3.6% to about $108.31 and WTI rose 3.3% to about $103.35. Separately, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a Saturday essay calling on AI companies to slow the pace of frontier-model development; OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk both said they agreed. Nasdaq 100 futures fell roughly 1.5%, with Broadcom, Intel and Marvell down about 3%, 5% and 7% respectively in premarket trading. None of that changes the underlying math — Friday's close (Dow +509.19pts/+0.98% to 52,573.29, S&P 500 +0.86% to 7,656.98, Nasdaq +0.96% to 26,333.04) is still the last real print, and today's routine reads the book rather than re-fetching prices — but the computed zone list deteriorated hard: Palo Alto Networks, RTX and Eli Lilly all broke straight out of the live buy band into BROKE ZONE, and Novo Nordisk fell clean through it to a 200-day reclaim gate, leaving just four names in zone (Amazon, Bank of America, JPMorgan, Charles Schwab) against six at Edition 028.

Big Picture Regime A third risk-off driver joins the stack

RISK-OFF holds and now runs on three independent legs at once. CME FedWatch prices roughly 85-87% odds of a 25bp hike at Wednesday's FOMC decision — up from about 60% a week ago and just 44% in early August — while Saudi Arabia's pipeline shutdown removes the last major Hormuz bypass on top of a tanker war that has already run since late February. Layered on both: the first coordinated AI-development slowdown call from the industry's own leaders, which reintroduces pace-and-policy risk to the theme that has carried most of this year's rally. The 10-year Treasury sits near 4.92-4.96%, gold has fallen roughly 0.8% toward $4,300-4,375/oz even with two live war-risk premia in the market, and Bitcoin is holding near $77,700.

What it means: a second oil-chokepoint failure landing this close to a hike that markets already treat as close to certain gives the Fed two live hawkish inputs, not one — and it gives the book's crowded AI-Compute theme (TSM, NVDA, AMD, AVGO, LRCX, AMAT, COHR, MU) its first real test of whether "buy the dip" still works once the dip carries a policy narrative.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Saudi Arabia shuts its East-West pipeline, Hormuz's last major bypassMatters
Drones launched from Iraq damaged the 750-mile, 7-million-barrel-a-day conduit to the Red Sea port of Yanbu on Thursday; Riyadh closed it as a precaution over the weekend. Brent ~$108.31 (+3.6%), WTI ~$103.35 (+3.3%) — a second chokepoint failure stacking directly on the Hormuz disruption that has run since the Iran war began in late February.
NOW · Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI all call for an AI development slowdownMatters
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's Saturday essay argued frontier labs must pull back on capability advances over safety concerns; Sam Altman and Elon Musk both said they agreed. Nasdaq 100 futures fell roughly 1.5%, with Broadcom, Intel and Marvell down about 3%, 5% and 7% in premarket trading. First coordinated pace-of-development warning from the industry's own leaders — a new risk vector for the AI-Compute theme that runs through a third of the Alpha 100 book.
NOW · The live buy roster shrinks to four as three zones break and one falls throughBook
Palo Alto Networks, RTX and Eli Lilly all dropped straight out of the live buy band into BROKE ZONE · knife, and Novo Nordisk fell clean through the zone to a 200-day reclaim gate. Amazon, Bank of America, JPMorgan and Charles Schwab are the only names still in zone — down from six at Edition 028 — see Buy Zone Radar and Alpha 100 changes below.
NEXT · Wednesday's FOMC decision, hike odds near 87%Catalyst
2:00pm ET / 19:00 Dublin, with the press conference at 2:30pm ET / 19:30 Dublin. CME FedWatch has this at roughly 85-87%, up from about 60% a week ago and 44% in early August — the real event risk now is the dot plot and Powell's tone on what follows, not the 25bp itself.
NEXT · Gold sinks even as two wars run hotWatch
Spot gold has fallen roughly 0.8% toward $4,300-4,375/oz as hike expectations dominate the safe-haven bid an active oil-supply shock would normally support. Worth watching whether that divergence holds once Wednesday's decision actually lands, or whether gold catches a relief bid on a smaller move or a softer statement.

Movers & Why Fri close · Mon premarket

Fri close: Dow +509.19pts/+0.98% → 52,573.29 · S&P 500 +0.86% → 7,656.98 · Nasdaq +0.96% → 26,333.04 (CPI matched expectations, snapping four-day losing streaks) · Mon premarket: Dow futures ~-0.2% · S&P 500 futures ~-0.6 to -0.7% · Nasdaq 100 futures ~-1.5% · 10Y ~4.92-4.96% · Brent ~$108.31 · WTI ~$103.35 · Gold ~$4,300-4,375/oz · Bitcoin ~$77,700 · Fed hike odds ~86-87%

Brent crude · ~$108.31, +3.6%Matters
Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline over the weekend after Thursday's drone damage — the last major alternative route around the Strait of Hormuz. Direct driver of this morning's futures weakness and of the math behind every energy and defense name in the book — FANG, EOG and LNG already sit within a few percent of their zones; RTX just broke its own on Iran-linked demand exposure.
Nvidia, Broadcom, Intel, Marvell · chip stocks fall 2-7% premarketMatters
Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk all called for an AI-development slowdown over the weekend; reports point to enterprise-software names catching a rotation bid instead. Direct hit to the book's AI-Compute theme — NVDA sits as a limit order at $213, AVGO and IREN sit on reclaim gates, LRCX and AMAT are already broke-zone.
Fed hike odds · ~86-87% for WednesdayWatch
CME FedWatch's implied probability has roughly doubled in six weeks: 44% on 7 Aug, 60% on 8 Sep, ~86-87% now. 10-year yield near 4.92-4.96%. The financials that lagged all summer — JPMorgan, Bank of America, Charles Schwab — are now the book's only live buy-zone names, a direct read-through from the repricing.
Gold · ~$4,300-4,375/oz, -0.8%Watch
Falling even with two live oil-supply shocks running in parallel, on the view that a near-certain hike outweighs the war premium. Bitcoin is holding up better, near $77,700, as of this morning.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

No fresh Form 4 insider cluster or notable congressional trade tied to a specific Alpha 100 name surfaced in today's search — an honest gap, not an empty market; this session's search access does not reach the raw OpenInsider/congressional-tracker feeds directly, so treat as incomplete rather than negative. The one dated disclosure found: Rep. Nancy Pelosi's August filing (45-day STOCK Act lag, surfacing only this week) showed new options purchases in Bloom Energy (BE) and Intel (INTC) — neither is in the Alpha 100 book, so it's background context only, not an actionable signal here.

Ignore This Noise filter

Circle's $400 million Tazapay acquisition. It's a real, sourced deal — Circle is buying the Singapore-based cross-border payments firm to push USDC into emerging markets — but Circle is already roughly 26% above its 50-day zone here on the book (WATCH, +25.6%), Friday's tape showed barely a 0.3% reaction to the news, and chasing a stretched name into deal-news euphoria is exactly what the tranche rules exist to prevent.

So: the actual dated, tradeable story this morning is the pipeline shutdown and the AI-slowdown selloff feeding into Wednesday's Fed decision — not a stablecoin issuer's M&A headline.

Alpha 100 List changes

No editorial adds or ejections today — today's routine reads the existing Alpha 100 book rather than re-fetching prices, and today's scheduled GitHub Actions refresh (11:00 UTC) had not landed as of this edition's publish time; the most recent available data is Friday 11 Sep's 14:40 UTC close, now roughly 69 hours old. Within that data, the computed zone list moved hard since Edition 028: Palo Alto Networks, RTX and Eli Lilly all dropped from BUY NOW straight into BROKE ZONE · knife, and Novo Nordisk fell clean through the zone into a 200-day reclaim gate. JPMorgan and Charles Schwab climbed from limit orders into the live buy band, taking the in-zone roster to four (Amazon, Bank of America, JPMorgan, Charles Schwab) — down from six. On the repair side, Coherent and GE Vernova climbed out of BROKE ZONE into AT ZONE · downswing, while AMD, Nokia and Eaton pushed up from at-zone·downswing into limit-order territory, and Celestica and Meta did the same from reclaim gates. Breadth: 51 of 100 names sit above their 50-day — informational only, no colour.
