The Daily Brief

EDITION 028TUE 8 SEP 2026 · 13:30 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
A Houthi missile barrage on Saudi oil facilities pushes Brent toward $100 and Canada's new tariffs take effect — buy the book's six live zones in thirds, Palo Alto Networks newly among them.

Tuesday's Houthi strikes on Abha, Jazan, Najran and Khamis Mushait wounded more than 70 people and set fires at Saudi oil facilities and utilities, pushing Brent to roughly $98.59 a barrel — its highest since the Iran war began squeezing the Strait of Hormuz — with WTI near $92-93. Dow futures were down about 389 points (-0.73%) pre-open, alongside a fresh US-Canada trade escalation: Ottawa's retaliatory tariffs on $20B of US goods took effect at 12:01am ET today. None of that changes the book's math — Friday's close is still the last real print, and the last two Alpha 100 fetches both derive from it — but the zone list itself moved: Palo Alto Networks repaired back into range overnight, taking the live BUY NOW roster to six (joining Amazon, Bank of America, RTX, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly), while the broke-zone bucket shrank from eight names to four.

Big Picture Regime Oil shock stacks on the hawkish case

RISK-OFF holds and gets a second, independent driver: on top of Friday's payrolls beat repricing the 16 September FOMC decision toward a hike, a real oil supply shock is now in play. Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia's energy heartland threaten the Bab al-Mandeb strait just as the Iran war has already throttled Hormuz — together the two chokepoints carry roughly a fifth of global oil trade. Brent near $98-99 lands directly ahead of Thursday's PPI and Friday's CPI, the last inflation readings before the Fed decision.

What it means: a genuine energy-cost shock this close to the FOMC meeting cuts against the Fed's preferred "hold" case — higher gasoline and input costs show up in exactly the prints the committee is watching this week, which is why oil, not just labor data, is now a live input to Wednesday-to-Friday's rate-hike math.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Houthi attacks hit Saudi Arabia's oil heartlandMatters
Fires at oil facilities and utilities in Abha, Jazan, Najran and Khamis Mushait; more than 70 wounded. Saudi Aramco's Jizan refinery was hit for the third time in two months. Brent ~$98.59, WTI ~$92-93 — a second, independent chokepoint risk stacking on top of the Iran-war disruption to the Strait of Hormuz.
NOW · Canada's $20B retaliatory tariffs take effectWatch
15-50% counter-tariffs on nearly 900 US products (steel, appliances, agricultural equipment, dairy, paper, construction materials) landed at 12:01am ET, matching Washington's 50% levy on $20B of Canadian goods dollar-for-dollar. No Alpha 100 name is a direct target, but it's a second concurrent input-cost shock layering onto an already oil-driven inflation scare this week.
NOW · Small-business optimism turns down first time since springWatch
NFIB's August index fell to 98.7, missing the 99.3 consensus and reversing July's 99.8 (a post-spring high built on stronger hiring plans). The first soft read from Main Street since the labor-market scare Wednesday's ADP print raised last week — worth watching for a second confirming data point rather than trading on its own.
NOW · The broke-zone bucket repairs — Palo Alto graduates to BUY NOWBook
Monday's re-fetch (still built off Friday's close) moved zone anchors enough that Nokia, Lam Research and AMD all climbed out of BROKE ZONE into AT ZONE · downswing, and Palo Alto Networks cleared all the way into the live buy band. The broke-zone bucket is down to four names (Applied Materials, Datadog, Coherent, GE Vernova) from eight in Friday's edition — see Buy Zone Radar and Alpha 100 changes below.
NEXT · Thursday's PPI, Friday's CPICatalyst
10 and 11 September, both 8:30am ET (13:30 Dublin) — the last inflation prints before the 16 September FOMC decision, arriving with an active oil shock in the background. A hot pair locks in the hike markets are already pricing at roughly 55-65%; a cool pair is the only realistic path back to a hold.

Movers & Why Fri close · Tue premarket

Fri close: Dow -0.51% (-271.86pts) → 53,414.25 · S&P 500 -0.38% → 7,718.60 · Nasdaq -0.29% → 26,506.99 · Mon: markets closed (Labor Day) · Tue premarket: Dow futures -389pts/-0.73% · S&P futures -19.25pts/-0.25% · Nasdaq futures +21.25pts/+0.07% · 10Y ~4.77-4.80% · Brent ~$98.59 · WTI ~$92-93 · Gold ~$4,395/oz · Bitcoin ~$79,400-80,000 · DXY ~99.0-99.3

Brent crude · ~$98.59, nearing $100Matters
Houthi strikes on Saudi oil facilities and utilities Tuesday, the third hit on Aramco's Jizan refinery in two months. Direct driver of this morning's futures weakness and a fresh input into this week's inflation prints — several Alpha 100 energy names (XOM, EOG, FANG, COP, CVX, SLB, LNG) already sit within a limit order of their zones; watch them first if oil keeps climbing.
Canada retaliatory tariffs · $20B, effective todayMatters
15-50% counter-tariffs on steel, appliances, agricultural equipment and dairy, matching Washington's August levy dollar-for-dollar. No direct Alpha 100 hit, but it widens the trade-war input-cost story the market has to price alongside the oil shock this week.
Dow futures · -389pts / -0.73% premarketMatters
S&P futures -0.25%, Nasdaq futures roughly flat (+0.07%) — the underperformance is concentrated in oil-and-tariff-sensitive cyclicals, not growth/tech. First live session since Friday; nothing here is a confirmed cash print yet.
NFIB Small Business Optimism · 98.7 vs. 99.3 est.Watch
Down from July's 99.8, the first pullback after three months of hiring-led gains. A second-tier read, but it lands the same week as the PPI/CPI pair — worth tracking if it's confirmed by Thursday's initial claims.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

No fresh Form 4 insider cluster or notable congressional trade tied to a specific Alpha 100 name surfaced in today's search — an honest gap, not an empty market; this session's search access does not reach the raw OpenInsider/congressional-tracker feeds directly, so treat as incomplete rather than negative. Legislative update: Sen. Ossoff's bipartisan congressional stock-trading ban just passed the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee — the first time such a ban has ever cleared a Senate committee — and now awaits a full Senate floor vote; the House's own version (H.R.7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act) passed 22 July and remains parked behind it.

Ignore This Noise filter

IonQ's premarket pop ahead of today's Investor Day. It's a real, loud move on reported institutional buying and event-day optimism — but IonQ isn't in the Alpha 100, the driver is a single-company calendar event, and it carries no read-through for the book's positioning.

So: the actual dated, tradeable story this morning is the Houthi oil shock and the Canada tariff escalation stacking into this week's inflation prints — not a quantum-computing stock's investor-day rally.

Alpha 100 List changes

No editorial adds or ejections today — today's routine reads the existing Alpha 100 book rather than re-fetching prices, and today's scheduled GitHub Actions refresh (11:00 UTC) had not landed as of this edition's publish time; the most recent available data is Monday's 16:10 UTC re-fetch, which is itself still built off Friday 4 Sep's close. Within that data, the computed zone list moved since Edition 027: Nokia, Lam Research and AMD all climbed out of BROKE ZONE into AT ZONE · downswing, and Palo Alto Networks repaired all the way into the live buy band — the sixth BUY NOW name alongside holdovers Amazon, Bank of America, RTX, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. The broke-zone bucket is now four names (Applied Materials, Datadog, Coherent, GE Vernova), down from eight in Friday's edition.
