The Daily Brief

EDITION 027MON 7 SEP 2026 · 13:15 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
US markets are closed for Labor Day — do nothing until Tuesday's reopen; hold the five live zones.

There is no session to react to today, so the number that matters is Friday's: August payrolls smashed estimates at +162,000 versus a +53,000 consensus, unemployment held at 4.1%, and the "labor is cracking" story that Wednesday's soft ADP print started was dead within 48 hours. Stocks sold off on the beat — Dow -0.51% to 53,414.25, S&P -0.38% to 7,718.60, Nasdaq -0.29% to 26,506.99 — because strong data now reads as hawkish: Fed-hike odds for the 16 September decision jumped to roughly 60%, and the Fed's quiet period started Saturday, so there's no Fedspeak to talk it back down before then. The five live BUY NOW zones (Amazon, Bank of America, RTX, Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly) are unchanged since Friday's fetch — there's nothing to add or trim with the market shut, so the only action today is planning Tuesday's reopen against them.

Big Picture Regime Hawkish case reasserts

Friday's 162k payroll beat erased in one print what Wednesday's ADP miss (38k vs. 48k expected) had spent two days building — unemployment held at 4.1% and Fed-hike odds for the 16 September FOMC meeting jumped to roughly 56-66% depending on the pricing source, up from near-zero rate-cut odds already baked in. RISK-OFF holds, but the character flipped: this is a market selling off on strong data, not weak data, and the hawkish case now has no obvious dovish off-ramp before the decision itself.

What it means: the Fed's quiet period runs Saturday 5 September through the 16 September decision — no Fedspeak to react to this week — so Wednesday's PPI and Thursday's CPI become the last data that can move the hike probability before the meeting; a hot CPI print all but locks it in, a cool one is the only thing left that could talk it back.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · US markets closed for Labor DayNo session
No regular trading, premarket or after-hours session today — NYSE and Nasdaq reopen Tuesday at 9:30am ET (2:30pm Dublin). Every number in this edition is Friday's close or later weekend levels for the 24-hour markets (oil, gold, crypto); nothing below is a same-day print.
NOW · August payrolls torch the "labor cracking" storyMatters
+162,000 jobs versus a +53,000 consensus, unemployment steady at 4.1%; June was revised up to +31k and July flipped from -23k to +21k. This is the third data point this cycle to reverse a prior week's narrative inside days — treat any single soft print (like Wednesday's ADP) as noise until a second one confirms it.
NOW · Memory names rip on a structural shortage, not a headlineWatch
SanDisk +11.9% and Micron +6.1% Friday as NAND pricing accelerates on AI-datacenter demand — Counterpoint Research now sees the memory shortage running through 2027, and Amazon just raised 2026 capex guidance to $220B partly because of it. Both names stay WATCH/WAIT tier in this book (SanDisk "knife until the cycle proves out," Micron a "crowded knife" with no buy verb) — the move is real, but it's exactly the kind of price action the engine is built to not chase.
NEXT · Wednesday's PPI, Thursday's CPICatalyst
10 and 11 September, both 8:30am ET — the last inflation prints before the 16 September FOMC decision, landing inside a Fed quiet period with no officials able to react publicly. A hot pair locks in the hike the market is already pricing; a cool pair is the only realistic path back to a hold.
NEXT · Iran war grinds into its seventh monthWatch
Day 191 of the conflict as of Sunday, with fresh Israel-Hezbollah strikes over the weekend even as both sides claim to honor a separate ceasefire, and no US-Iran de-escalation signal since Thursday's strikes on Kuwait. Brent settled near $96.28 Friday, its strongest week since July (+8%+), with the war premium now a genuine second inflation input alongside this week's PPI/CPI — not just a geopolitics headline.

Movers & Why Friday's close · markets shut today

Fri close: Dow -0.51% (-271.86pts) → 53,414.25 · S&P 500 -0.38% → 7,718.60 · Nasdaq -0.29% → 26,506.99 · Markets closed today (Labor Day), reopen Tue 9:30am ET · 10Y ~4.79% (touched 4.81%+ this week, highest since late 2023) · Brent ~$96.28 (+8%+ on the week) · WTI ~$91-92 · Gold ~$4,432-4,450/oz · Bitcoin ~$79,900 (Sun/Mon levels) · DXY 99.16

SanDisk (SNDK) · +11.9% FridayMatters
NAND pricing keeps accelerating as hyperscalers scramble for capacity — Counterpoint Research now calls the memory shortage a through-2027 story, not a quarter. Still WATCH tier in the Alpha 100 book ("knife until the cycle proves out") — a real theme move, not yet a buy signal here.
Micron (MU) · +6.1% FridayWatch
Same NAND/DRAM shortage driver as SanDisk; Wall Street models ~85% EPS growth into FY2027 on the back of it. WAIT tier in this book — "crowded knife," no buy verb even on a 6% pop; this is the discipline the engine is built to enforce.
August nonfarm payrolls · +162k vs. +53k expectedMatters
Leisure & hospitality led with +62k; Information and Financial Activities were the only sectors to shed jobs. Direct driver of Friday's selloff and this week's Fed repricing — see Big Picture and Trends above.
Fed-hike odds for 16 September · ~56-66%Matters
Up from near-zero rate-cut pricing before Friday's print; JPMorgan Wealth Management now calls a 25bp hike more likely than not. The Fed's quiet period (5-17 September) means this pricing runs on data alone until the decision — Wednesday's PPI and Thursday's CPI are the only things that can move it.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

No fresh Form 4 insider cluster or notable congressional trade tied to a specific Alpha 100 name surfaced in today's search — an honest gap, not an empty market; this session's search access does not reach the raw OpenInsider/congressional-tracker feeds directly, so treat as incomplete rather than negative. The House-passed trading-ban bill (232-198, 22 July) remains stalled in the Senate, unchanged from prior editions.

Ignore This Noise filter

Lululemon's 18% Friday plunge on a cut outlook. It's a loud, real number — but Lululemon isn't in the Alpha 100, the drop is company-specific (a guidance cut, not a macro signal), and it carries no read-through for the book's positioning.

So: the actual dated, tradeable story from Friday is the payrolls beat and what it does to Fed pricing into the 16 September decision — not a single retailer's guide-down.

Alpha 100 List changes

No editorial adds or ejections today — today's routine reads the existing Alpha 100 book rather than re-fetching prices; weekday refreshes run on GitHub Actions at 11:00 UTC and Monday's is a holiday, so Friday 4 Sep 14:36 UTC remains the current, not stale, snapshot until Tuesday's reopen. Since the last confirmed comparison point (Edition 025, 1 Sep), the live BUY NOW roster rotated from six names to five: Lockheed Martin, Eaton and Wells Fargo dropped out of range while Amazon and Novo Nordisk moved in, alongside holdovers RTX, Bank of America and Eli Lilly. The broke-zone bucket narrowed to 8 names from 10, concentrated in the same AI-capex chip and power-buildout cohort (Applied Materials, Datadog, Coherent, GE Vernova, AMD, Lam Research, Palo Alto, Nokia).
