The Daily Brief

EDITION 024MON 31 AUG 2026 · 13:30 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
The Buy Zone Radar fully rotated over the long weekend — buy Datadog, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Eli Lilly and Eaton in thirds; the chip-and-power broke-zone cohort still isn't a buy.

Friday closed slightly lower on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole debut — the S&P 500 eased 0.25% to 7,711.76, the Dow shed 9.45 points (-0.02%) to 53,559.99 and the Nasdaq slipped 0.52% to 26,402.42. Monday's premarket is soft again: Dow futures down roughly 63 points (-0.1%), S&P futures -0.1% to -0.2%, Nasdaq 100 futures near flat, after the US struck Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday — the first such US strike in the region in about a month. Brent jumped 2.9% to $90.69, WTI is back near $85, and energy is the one clean sector bid (Halliburton +2.5%, Chevron/Valero/Occidental +2%, Exxon +1.5% premarket). Underneath the headlines, Saturday's scheduled GitHub Action refresh actually landed and repriced the whole radar: Datadog repaired out of broke-zone into a live buy (-5.0% to its level), Wells Fargo and Bank of America both slid back into range, and Eli Lilly joins fresh — only Eaton holds over from Thursday's five. Palo Alto Networks, Lockheed Martin, ASML and Novo Nordisk have all moved out of the zone (now 2–8% away or in a downswing). Buy the five live names in thirds; leave the nine-name broke-zone cohort — still mostly AI-capex and power names — alone until it repairs.

Big Picture Regime Hawkish shift

RISK-OFF holds, and the Fed side of it got more hawkish, not less, after Friday's Jackson Hole keynote. Warsh gave his first speech as chair a genuinely hawkish tilt — inflation, not growth, is his stated priority — and prediction markets split hard on the read: Kalshi's contract swung toward a near coin-flip on a September hike (CNBC reported ~48% hike odds intraday Friday, up from roughly 30% before he spoke), while Polymarket and Kalshi's own headline contract were still showing hold near 73–74% (hike ~25–28.5%) as of late Friday — a genuinely unsettled market, not consensus. The dollar index firmed to ~99.7 on the back of it, and that same safe-haven bid is getting a second leg today from the Iran strikes.

What it means: two hawkish-leaning forces — Warsh's rhetoric and a real war premium in oil — are stacking on the same day. Tuesday's ISM Manufacturing and JOLTS prints are the first hard data that can confirm or puncture the hike case; nothing today should be sized off Warsh's words alone.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Fresh US strikes reignite the Hormuz war premiumCatalyst
The US hit Iranian rocket launchers that were reportedly preparing to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz — the first such US strike in about a month, in a conflict that has run since late February. Brent jumped 2.9% to $90.69; WTI is back near $85. This is the direct driver of today's premarket weakness in equities and strength in energy — not a new macro story, an old one flaring up again.
NOW · Energy is the only clean sector bidRotation
Halliburton +2.5%, Chevron, Valero and Occidental all +2%, Exxon +1.5% premarket; the broad energy ETF (XLE) +1.3%, oil-and-gas E&P (XOP) +1.7%. Classic war-premium rotation — money hiding in the sector that benefits directly from the thing everyone else is selling off against.
NOW · September hike-vs-hold odds genuinely split after WarshWatch
Trackers disagree by a wide margin right now — some show a near coin-flip on a 25bp hike, others still show hold favored around 73–74%. That spread is itself the signal: this is an unsettled market waiting on data, not one that has already made up its mind.
NEXT · Tuesday's ISM Manufacturing PMI + JOLTSCatalyst
10:00 ET / 15:00 Dublin, Tuesday 1 September — the first hard data since Warsh's speech, alongside Fed Governor Barr speaking the same day. A soft ISM print with sticky JOLTS openings would feed the hold case; a hot print feeds the hike case directly into Friday's payrolls.
NEXT · Wednesday's ADP private payrollsData
8:15 ET / 13:15 Dublin, Wednesday 2 September — the last labor read before Friday's nonfarm payrolls report. Part of the same pre-positioning run (ISM → JOLTS → ADP → payrolls) that's meant to leave less room for a surprise on Friday.

Movers & Why Friday's close + Monday's premarket

Fri close: Dow -0.02% → 53,559.99 · S&P 500 -0.25% → 7,711.76 · Nasdaq -0.52% → 26,402.42 · Mon premarket: Dow futures ~-0.1% (-63pts) · S&P futures -0.1% to -0.2% · Nasdaq 100 futures near flat · Brent +2.9% → $90.69 · WTI ~$85 · 10Y 4.716% · DXY ~99.70 · Bitcoin ~$78,150 · Gold —

US strikes Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of HormuzMatters
First such US military action in the region in about a month, in a conflict running since the US and Israel opened an air campaign against Iran on 28 February. Brent +2.9% to $90.69. The direct driver of today's tape — equities soft, energy and the dollar bid.
Fed Chair Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole debut ripples into MondayMatters
Friday's keynote leaned hard on inflation as the Fed's main focus; September hike-vs-hold pricing split sharply across trackers in its wake (see Big Picture). The dollar's firmness today is as much this as it is Iran — two hawkish forces landing on the same tape.
PG&E -16% premarket on a blocked wildfire-liability capMinor
California lawmakers blocked a proposal that would have limited individuals' ability to seek damages from utilities whose equipment sparks wildfires. Single-name, state-regulatory story — not an Alpha 100 name and not a macro signal (see Ignore This for today's actual noise).
Bitcoin and gold roughly flat, dollar the real safe-haven moverMinor
Bitcoin sits around $78,150, little changed; no confirmed gold print for today's session as of publish time. The safe-haven bid today is showing up in the dollar and in oil, not in the usual crisis hedges.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

No fresh Form 4 cluster or STOCK Act disclosure tied to a specific Alpha 100 name surfaced in today's search — an honest gap, not an empty market. The broader theme reported around the Iran conflict is congressional buying interest in defense names generally, but nothing dated or ticker-specific enough to report as a signal today. The House-passed congressional trading-ban bill (232–198, 22 July) remains stalled in the Senate, unchanged from prior editions.

Ignore This Noise filter

The IRGC's claim of "decisive control" over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media rhetoric continues to frame the Strait as fully under Iranian control, and traffic through it has reportedly been down roughly 95% for months under the blockade.

So: that backdrop has been priced for months — it is not new information. The actual signal today is the specific, dated event: Sunday's US strike on Iranian rocket launchers and the fresh 2.9% pop in Brent that followed it. Trade the strike, not the running rhetoric around the blockade.

Alpha 100 List changes

No editorial adds or ejections today — all 100 names carry the same tier, tag and thesis as the prior edition. Saturday's scheduled weekday GitHub Action refresh (11:02 UTC) landed and repriced the book: the BUY NOW roster fully rotated from Thursday's five (Palo Alto Networks, Lockheed Martin, ASML, Eaton, Novo Nordisk) to a new five (Datadog, Eaton, Eli Lilly, Wells Fargo, Bank of America) — only Eaton holds over. Datadog repaired out of the broke-zone bucket entirely; the broke-zone cohort (9 names) is now Applied Materials, Coherent, GE Vernova, Vertiv, Quanta Services, Lam Research, AMD, Nokia and Marvell, still concentrated in AI-capex chip names and power-buildout names. Nvidia sits 4.4% above its zone as a limit order, not in the broke-zone bucket.
