The Daily Brief

EDITION 019FRI 21 AUG 2026 · 14:00 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Yesterday's five BUY NOW zones are down to one survivor — buy ASML, Eaton and Dell, do nothing on GE Vernova, Goldman, Wells Fargo and Novo Nordisk until they repair.

Thursday closed ugly: the Dow lost 703.84 points (-1.32%) to 52,759.21, the S&P 500 fell 0.87% to 7,641.16 and the Nasdaq dropped 1% to 26,067.17, as Treasury's doubled bond-buyback operation ($4bn+ per operation, up from $2bn) failed to hold the 10-year under 4.70% and Walmart's soft US comps added a consumer wobble. Friday's futures are bouncing (Dow/S&P +0.3%, Nasdaq +0.5%) but nothing underneath has actually improved: the 10-year still holds near 4.71%, Brent crude is above $93 and on pace for its second straight weekly gain of more than 5% after Treasury Secretary Bessent vowed the "toughest sanctions in history" against Iran, and gold has ripped 1.44% to $4,637 as the hedge of choice. Inside the Alpha 100 the damage is concrete: breadth fell to 48/100 above the 50-day from 55, and of Thursday's five live BUY NOW names only ASML is still in zone — GE Vernova broke its zone entirely (-6.5%), Goldman Sachs got demoted to a downswing watch (-4.8%), and both Wells Fargo and Novo Nordisk fell through their 200-day into reclaim gates. Eaton and Dell rotated in fresh. Buy the three that are actually in zone. Everything else waits.

Big Picture Regime Unchanged

RISK-OFF holds, and today is the same story compounding rather than a new one: a bond-and-oil problem, not an earnings problem. The Fed's target sits at 3.50–3.75% after five meetings on hold, with three dissents favouring a hike at the 29 July decision. CME FedWatch now prices roughly a 31.6% chance of a hike at the 16 September FOMC (68.4% hold) — down from an ~82% peak in late July but still very much live, and firm the way this week's data has run. Bessent's escalation against Iran is the fresh input: a pledge of the "toughest sanctions in history" is exactly the kind of headline that keeps oil bid and the inflation math hawkish at the worst possible moment for a Fed that already has three members wanting to hike.

What it means: nothing has resolved the tension between firm data, elevated oil and a rate-sensitive market — it has intensified it. That is why the casualties today are precisely the names that needed cheap duration to work: financials (GS, WFC) and long-duration industrials (GEV). The one survivor, ASML, does not depend on the Fed cutting anything.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Thursday's BUY NOW roster got gutted overnightCracking
Five names carried a live BUY NOW as of Thursday's edition: GE Vernova, Goldman Sachs, Novo Nordisk, ASML and Wells Fargo. Today only ASML remains. GEV broke its 50-day zone outright (-6.5%, now the newest name in BROKE ZONE); GS was demoted to AT ZONE · downswing (-4.8%) by the slope filter; WFC and NVO both fell through their 200-day into reclaim gates. Eaton and Dell rotated in as the two new in-zone names. A five-name buy list becoming a one-name buy list in a single session is the actual story today, not the futures bounce.
NOW · Bessent's Iran sanctions pledge keeps oil's weekly gain aliveCatalyst
Brent is above $93 and on pace for a second straight weekly gain topping 5%, its best close since 24 July, after Bessent told CNBC the US will impose the "toughest sanctions in history" on Iran — echoing Trump's Wednesday threat of a "crushing" economic operation. The US and Iran remain far from any deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Every escalation here is a direct line into the same inflation math pressuring the Fed — this is the mechanism, not a side story.
NOW · Gold is pricing the fear; silver isn't buying itWatch
Gold jumped 1.44% to $4,637.10 in early Friday trading while silver fell 1.92% to $69.42 — a split that shows up when the move is specifically about sovereign/inflation hedging (Iran, oil, rate uncertainty) rather than a broad commodity bid. A genuine risk gauge, and one that is not agreeing with equity futures' modest bounce this morning.
NEXT · Nvidia reports Wednesday 26 AugustCatalyst
The next scheduled AI-compute catalyst, five sessions out. NVDA currently sits BUY ≤ $207 on the radar, 4.6% above its zone — a limit order, not a chase, into the print. Nothing to do before it except decide the limit now.
NEXT · Jackson Hole, 27–29 August — Warsh's debut keynote Friday 28 AugustCatalyst
The Kansas City Fed symposium runs Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 August on "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy," with Chair Kevin Warsh delivering his first keynote on Friday morning, 28 August — three weeks ahead of the 16 September FOMC. The single biggest scheduled read on how a new Chair frames the hike question, landing one week from today.

Movers & Why Thursday's close + Friday's premarket

Thu close: Dow -1.32% → 52,759.21 · S&P 500 -0.87% → 7,641.16 · Nasdaq -1.00% → 26,067.17 · Fri premarket: Dow/S&P futures +0.3% · Nasdaq futures +0.5% · Brent >$93 · 10Y 4.71% · 30Y — · WTI — · Gold $4,637.10 (+1.44%) · Bitcoin $77,717.61

Ross Stores (ROST) · Q2 beat, +7.9% after hours to $247.12Matters
EPS of $2.66 crushed the $1.85–1.93 guide and ~$1.94 consensus on sales up 13% and comps up 10%; the FY26 EPS guide was raised to $8.61–8.77. About $253m of the operating-margin expansion came from IEEPA tariff refunds, but margin still expanded 205bp excluding that benefit. Shares had fallen 2.43% into the print during Thursday's broad selloff before reversing hard after hours. Not an Alpha 100 name, but a clean, current read that the value/off-price consumer is intact — a genuine counterweight to Walmart's soft comps this week.
Treasury doubles bond buybacks · 10-year still can't hold 4.70%Matters
Bessent's operation size rose to at least $4bn from $2bn per buyback, aimed at supporting the long end after the 30-year's 19-year high. It bought one session of relief on Wednesday before both the 10-year and 30-year round-tripped it Thursday, and the 10-year is still sitting at 4.71% this morning. A liquidity backstop is not a buyer of last resort — it smooths the path, it doesn't change the supply arithmetic, and the market re-priced that within 24 hours.
CME FedWatch hike odds fall to 31.6% from a ~82% July peakMatters
September 16 FOMC pricing has drifted toward a hold (68.4%) as the weaker July jobs data works through the curve, even with three sitting dissents favouring a hike. Directionally supportive for rate-sensitive names — but Thursday's price action in GS and WFC shows the market isn't trading that relief yet; it's trading the oil and yield levels in front of it.
Gold $4,637 vs. Silver $69.42 · a genuine hedge divergenceMatters
Gold's 1.44% gain against silver's 1.92% loss in the same session is the tell for a sovereign-risk/inflation hedge rather than a broad commodities rally. Worth watching alongside the 10-year — if both keep moving together, that's the market's real read on the Iran-sanctions escalation, more honest than the equity futures bounce.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

Congress · Stop Insider Trading Act passed the HouseDated 22 Jul
The House passed the Stop Insider Trading Act 232–198 on 22 July, barring members of Congress, spouses and dependents from trading individual stocks and requiring 7-day advance disclosure of intended sales. The bill lands in the final term of former Speaker Pelosi, whose family's $30m-to-$278m trading record became the case study driving it. Not a signal to trade on — a structural change to how much of today's "smart money" congressional-disclosure flow even exists going forward.
Insider Form 4 clusters and fresh STOCK Act disclosures tied to an Alpha 100 name specifically: not collected this session — an honest gap, not an empty market. The 45-day disclosure lag means any fresh congressional filing today would still describe early-July decisions.

FRI 21 AUG 21:00
US cash close (4:00pm ET).Judge it on whether the Dow/S&P actually hold this morning's +0.3% bounce into the close — a genuine green day would be the first since Tuesday. A fade back to red confirms Thursday's break wasn't a one-off.
SAT 22 – SUN 23 AUG
Weekend Iran-sanctions rollout risk. Bessent's "toughest sanctions in history" package details are still to be specified.Nothing to trade over the weekend — but Monday's oil open is the first real read on whether the package is bigger or smaller than priced.
MON 24 AUG
First session of Jackson Hole week. No first-tier US data scheduled until Warsh's Thursday keynote.Use the quiet open to set the ASML, Eaton and Dell thirds now — Nvidia earnings (Wed) and Warsh (Fri) both land before the week is out.

Ignore This Noise filter

"Snap up 467% in 24 hours" and similar meme-stock spike headlines (Snap, IREN, Strategy). That figure describes a spike in social-media mentions, not the share price — a distinction most aggregator headlines drop entirely. IREN, for what it's worth, is an actual Alpha 100 name and it's sitting in a reclaim gate today, roughly 9% below its 200-day — the opposite of a breakout.

So: ignore the mention-count headlines. The two things that actually moved positioning today were the Bessent Iran-sanctions pledge lifting oil and gold, and the Alpha 100's BUY NOW roster collapsing from five names to one — neither of which trended on social media.

Alpha 100 List changes

No editorial adds or ejections today. Market-data refresh completed at 11:05 UTC — all 100 names carry a live feed, 48/100 above the 50-day (down from 55). The BUY NOW roster turned over hard: GE Vernova broke its zone (-6.5%, now BROKE ZONE), Goldman Sachs was demoted to AT ZONE · downswing (-4.8%) by the slope filter, and Wells Fargo and Novo Nordisk both fell through their 200-day into fresh reclaim gates — leaving only ASML in zone from Thursday's five, joined by Eaton and Dell rotating in. The BROKE ZONE bucket grew to eight (from seven) as GE Vernova joined Coherent, Applied Materials, Nokia, Vertiv, Lam Research, AMD and Datadog; Broadcom remains in its own reclaim gate (-1.4%, unchanged since Thursday). Editorial tiers, tags and theses unchanged since the 14 Jul regime read.
