Yesterday's bond relief lasted one session. This morning's US data came in firm — initial jobless claims fell 6,000 to 206,000 for the week ended 15 August against a 210,000 consensus, with the prior week revised up to 212,000, and the August Philadelphia Fed business index beat its ~25 consensus — and long yields promptly gave back Wednesday's buyback-driven drop: the 10-year is back up 5bp to 4.70% and the 30-year up 5bp to 5.25%. Add Trump vowing to squeeze Iran economically, with Brent quoted around $95.40 mid-morning, and equities have drifted lower all session (Dow -0.6%, S&P 500 -0.3%, Nasdaq -0.5% intraday), though the Russell 2000 is up ~0.5% — a rotation, not a rout. Inside the Alpha 100 the same rotation is visible: the BROKE ZONE bucket holds at seven names but the membership churned — Datadog and Lam Research broke down, Marvell repaired back into band and Rocket Lab fell through its 200-day to a reclaim gate. Five names carry a live BUY NOW — GE Vernova, Goldman Sachs, Novo Nordisk, ASML and Wells Fargo — and that, plus four limit orders in the banks and power names, is the whole actionable list. Do nothing on the seven knives.
The regime stays RISK-OFF, and today clarifies why: this is a bond-market and energy problem, not an earnings problem. The Fed has held at 3.50–3.75% five meetings running, with three dissents in favour of a hike at the 29 July meeting, and futures still price roughly a 30% chance of a September hike against ~70% for a pause — down from an 82.4% peak in late July but nowhere near zero. Firm claims and a hot Philly Fed print push that debate back toward the hawks precisely when the long end is already strained; the Treasury's expanded long-dated buybacks pulled the 30-year off its 19-year high of 5.34% for exactly one session before supply reasserted itself.

"Moderna crashes 20%" as a market story. It is the give-back of a +177% single session — the largest one-day gain in the company's history, on a genuinely important melanoma result — and the stock is still worth multiples of what it was on Tuesday. A 20% retrace of a double is profit-taking, not a broken thesis and not a market signal. Every screen will rank it the day's worst S&P performer; that ranking is an artefact of yesterday's move, not information about today's.
