The Daily Brief

EDITION 016TUE 18 AUG 2026 · 12:45 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Buy the zones, ignore the Oman threat — the real story today is the 30-year yield, not Trump's rhetoric.

Monday closed lower a third straight session — S&P 500 -0.52% to 7,745.06, Dow -0.51% (-272.63pts) to 53,459.78, Nasdaq -0.32% to 26,644.91 — as oil and long-end yields jumped on renewed US-Iran war fears. Tuesday's premarket extends that: Dow futures flat, S&P futures -0.4%, Nasdaq-100 futures -1.1%, after Trump said he intends to inflict more economic pain on Iran and threatened to "bomb the shit out of" Oman if it interferes with US plans for the Strait of Hormuz — a threat, not a strike, after the 60-day US-Iran peace-talks window closed Monday with no deal. Brent is up 2.9% to $91.10, WTI up 0.4% to $84.07. Separately, and more structurally, the 30-year Treasury yield hit ~5.31% overnight, its highest since July 2007, on heavy federal debt issuance and uncertainty around new Fed Chair Warsh — even as the 10-year sits flat at 4.72% and September rate-hike odds have actually fallen to ~30% (from the 3-dissent 9-3 hold on 29 Jul). Home Depot beat on both lines before the open (revenue $47.9bn, +5.7% y/y, vs. $47.5bn est.) and reaffirmed FY guidance despite what its CFO called "frozen housing market conditions." The Alpha 100 Buy Zone Radar, refreshed at 11:05 UTC, just widened to 15 names in band — a near-record — as Monday's broad AI-compute pullback pulled names back to their 50-day bases.

Big Picture Regime Unchanged

Two separate stories are both pushing the tape red at once, and they don't agree with each other. The Iran/Hormuz story is a geopolitical-inflation risk — oil up, a real war that could reignite — while the 30-year yield at a 19-year high is a fiscal/duration-supply story (heavy Treasury issuance, a new Fed chair the market doesn't fully trust yet), not a near-term hike story: the 10-year is flat and September hike odds actually fell to ~30% this week. Equities are trading both fears at once even though only one of them (Hormuz) is genuinely new today.

What it means: don't read this morning's red futures as one coherent signal. The long-end yield move raises the discount rate on every stock's future cash flows regardless of what Iran does next — that's the one to actually track, not the Oman headline.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Iran/Hormuz escalation is rhetoric so far, not a new strikeDiverging
The 60-day US-Iran peace-talks window (agreed in June) closed Monday with no deal; Trump followed by threatening to "bomb the shit out of" Oman if it interferes with US plans for the Strait, and separately promised to bomb Iran "twenty times harder" if it restricts oil flow. Shipping through Hormuz remains near a standstill amid sporadic tanker attacks. Brent is up 2.9% to $91.10 on the threat alone. No new strike has actually happened yet — a real escalation would move oil and equities much harder than today's rhetoric-driven futures move.
NOW · Long-end Treasury yields hit a 19-year high, decoupled from the Fed's near-term pathDiverging
The 30-year yield reached roughly 5.31% overnight, its highest since July 2007, after last week's $25bn 30-year auction priced at 5.216% (worst since 2001) — driven by heavy federal debt issuance, sticky tariff/energy inflation, and uncertainty around new Fed Chair Warsh. The 10-year, by contrast, sits flat at 4.72%, and September hike odds actually fell to ~30% this week. This is a term-premium/supply story, not a hike story — it hits long-duration growth stocks' valuations regardless of what the Fed does next month.
NOW · Buy Zone Radar widens to 15 names, a near-record bandWidening
Four names carry a fresh BUY NOW signal (Applied Materials, Datadog, Goldman Sachs, Eli Lilly), nine more sit AT ZONE but flagged downswing (Rocket Lab, Alphabet, Celestica, Marvell, Vertiv, AMD, Broadcom, TSMC, Lam Research), and two sit BROKE ZONE awaiting repair (Modine, Nokia) — up from 11 in band on Thursday's edition. The widening is Monday's broad AI-compute pullback pulling names back toward their 50-day bases, not a change in the underlying uptrends.
NEXT · FOMC Minutes, Wednesday 19:00 DublinCatalyst
The minutes from the 29 July meeting, where the Committee held 9-3 with three members dissenting in favor of a hike, are released Wednesday afternoon. The real tell is how close those three dissenters came to a majority — a bigger hawkish undertone than the headline vote suggests would matter more than this week's ~30% hike-odds number.
NEXT · Walmart earnings, Thursday pre-openCatalyst
Walmart reports fiscal Q2 before Thursday's open, two days after Home Depot beat and reaffirmed guidance despite "frozen housing market conditions." Walmart is the read on the mass consumer, not just Home Depot's pro/contractor base — a second data point on whether spending is actually cracking.

Movers & Why Monday's close + Tuesday's premarket

Mon close: Dow -0.51% (-272.63pts) → 53,459.78 · S&P -0.52% → 7,745.06 · Nasdaq -0.32% → 26,644.91 · Tue premarket: Dow fut flat · S&P fut -0.4% · Nasdaq-100 fut -1.1% · Brent $91.10 · WTI $84.07 · 10Y 4.72% · 30Y ~5.31% · DXY 99.47 · Bitcoin ~$64,100

Home Depot (HD) beats, reaffirms guidance despite "frozen" housingMatters
Q2 revenue $47.9bn (+5.7% y/y) vs. $47.5bn est.; FY guidance reaffirmed (sales growth 2.5-4.5%, operating margin 12.4-12.6%). CFO Richard McPhail told CNBC the company is "operating in frozen housing market conditions" but is winning share with both pro and consumer. Not an Alpha 100 name, but the cleanest read yet on whether the consumer is cracking under high rates — the answer today is share gains, not collapse.
Reddit (RDDT) joins the S&P 500 before today's openMechanical
Reddit replaces AvalonBay Communities (being acquired by Equity Residential) in the index, effective before Tuesday's open. JPMorgan estimates passive funds need to buy roughly 16.7 million shares — about 2.8x average daily volume. Not an Alpha 100 name and not a fundamentals story — a mechanical index-flow event, worth noting for today's volume, not for any Alpha 100 call.
Oil · Brent +2.9% to $91.10Matters
Trump's Oman threat and the expired US-Iran talks window pushed Brent through $91 this morning; WTI is up a more modest 0.4% to $84.07. The regime driver — a genuine escalation from here feeds straight into inflation and reopens the hike debate that this week's data had been closing.
30-year Treasury yield · ~5.31%, highest since 2007Matters
Extends last week's selloff, which forced a $25bn 30-year auction at 5.216% — the worst such print since 2001. A duration/term-premium story from heavy debt issuance and Fed-chair uncertainty, distinct from the Iran-driven oil move — see Big Picture.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

No qualifying insider cluster or fresh, dated congressional disclosure tied to an Alpha 100 name surfaced this session — honest gap, not an empty market. Context only: the House passed a bill in late July (232-198) that would bar sitting members of Congress from buying individual stocks going forward, without forcing divestiture of existing holdings — a structural change to watch for how it reshapes future STOCK Act disclosure flow, not a trade signal today.

Ignore This Noise filter

"Economic alarm that foreshadowed 2008 crisis is blaring again" — the framing on the 30-year yield hitting a 19-year high. The yield move is real and worth tracking (see Big Picture), but the crisis framing overstates it: this is a Treasury-supply and term-premium story from heavy debt issuance and a new Fed chair the market is still pricing in, not a credit or banking-system stress signal. The 10-year sits flat at 4.72% and near-term hike odds actually fell to ~30% this week — the short end shows no comparable alarm.

So: track the 30-year level itself, not the crisis headlines built on top of it. A genuine stress signal would show up in the 10-year and credit spreads too, and it hasn't yet.
