The Daily Brief

EDITION 012TUE 11 AUG 2026 · 12:45 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Don't trust the flat open. Oil's grind toward $90 is doing more talking than the tape is.

Monday closed essentially flat-to-down (Dow -0.31% to 53,869.37, S&P -0.07% to 7,751.86, Nasdaq -0.28% to 26,615.29) as doubts over a lasting US-Iran deal capped Friday's jobs-miss rally. Tuesday's premarket looks calm — Dow futures flat, S&P futures +0.1%, Nasdaq-100 futures +0.3-0.4% — but that calm is sitting on top of a real move: Brent has climbed roughly 2.8% to ~$88 (WTI ~$82, +2.6%) after Houthi militants claimed a second strike near Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery and Strait of Hormuz tanker traffic fell to its lowest in over two months, while the 10-year Treasury yield pushed up to 4.73% — near its highest since January — as oil-driven inflation risk creeps back into the rate debate one day before CPI. Datadog is the one loud green name in the portfolio, +11% on a wave of analyst price-target hikes clawing back last Thursday's post-earnings crater, but the rally lifted it out of its own buy zone doing it. The Buy Zone Radar narrows to 3 names (from 5 Monday) as Applied Materials breaks down into knife territory and EOG lifts above its own level on a rally of its own.

Big Picture Regime Unchanged

Today intensifies Monday's story rather than reversing it: oil keeps grinding higher on unresolved Hormuz talks and a second Houthi strike near a Saudi Aramco refinery, and the 10-year yield followed it up to 4.73%, close to its highest level since January. The dollar index firmed to ~99.84, recovering off Friday's two-month low, while gold slipped 0.21% to $4,381.96 and Bitcoin eased further to ~$64,000 from Friday's ~$65,100 — both consistent with investors trimming safe-haven and speculative exposure into CPI rather than piling further into it. Fed-hike pricing is mixed rather than moving in one direction: CME's FedWatch shows a 44.4% chance of a September hike (up modestly on the day), while Kalshi (33%) and Polymarket (~37% hike-equivalent) still lean toward a hold — all still well below last week's ~54-67% hike-odds peaks after Friday's jobs miss.

What it means: oil's climb raises the stakes for Wednesday's CPI without yet reviving the hike case on its own — a hot core print now lands on a market that's already nudged yields higher, which could amplify the reaction either way.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Hormuz risk is escalating, not stabilizingEscalating
Houthi militants claimed a second attack tied to Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery complex days after the first, and Strait of Hormuz tanker traffic fell to roughly six ships versus the usual eleven — its lowest in over two months. Iran says an Oman-brokered shipping-route deal is close but has rejected direct US talks and won't reopen the strait on the current terms. This is now a multi-session trend, not a one-day headline — Brent is up for a fourth straight session.
NOW · Yields are climbing back toward the top of the rangeTightening
The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.73%, its highest since January, as oil-driven inflation risk works its way back into rate pricing even after Friday's jobs-miss reprieve. CME's hike odds ticked up to 44.4% from a low-40s base, while prediction markets (Kalshi, Polymarket) still lean toward a September hold. Judge tomorrow's CPI against this backdrop — a hot print now has a harder floor to fight against than it would have Friday.
NOW · Buy Zone Radar narrows to 3, with names exiting in both directionsRotating
Applied Materials broke down into BROKE ZONE (-5.8%, its first knife read since the slope filter went in) ahead of Thursday's earnings, while EOG (+3.4%) and Datadog (+4.4%, after today's 11% surge) both rallied out above their levels. Goldman Sachs, ASML and Novo Nordisk are the three names still in zone. A radar this size is a legitimate "do nothing" verdict for most of the list — it isn't a signal to chase EOG or Datadog higher.
NEXT · Wednesday's CPI is the actual referee, and JPMorgan has already mapped the levelsCatalyst
July CPI lands Wednesday 13:30 Dublin (8:30am ET). Dow Jones consensus: headline +0.2% m/m / 3.4% y/y (easing from 3.5%), core +0.2% m/m / 2.5% y/y (easing from 2.6%). JPMorgan's scenario table: core above 0.3% m/m (5% odds) → S&P -1.5% to -2.5%; core 0.25-0.3% (25% odds) → -0.5% to -1.25%; core 0.2-0.25% (40% odds, the base case) → +0.25% to +0.75%; core 0.15-0.2% (25% odds) → +0.5% to +1%; core below 0.15% (5% odds) → +1% to +2%. Kalshi traders are leaning cooler than the Street consensus — don't be surprised by a "sell the in-line number" reaction if the market has already priced the soft outcome in.
NEXT · Two radar-adjacent earnings this week test the zone read directlyCatalyst
Coherent reports Wednesday after the close (4:30pm ET call) and Applied Materials Thursday after the close (4:30pm ET call) — AMAT is today's fresh BROKE ZONE entry, so its own print is a direct test of whether this week's break repairs or confirms. Neither name is an entry ahead of its own print — let the earnings settle the question the zone read is already asking.

Movers & Why Monday's close + Tuesday's premarket

Mon close: Dow -0.31% (-167.56pts) → 53,869.37 · S&P -0.07% → 7,751.86 · Nasdaq -0.28% → 26,615.29 · Tue premarket: Dow fut flat · S&P fut +0.1% · Nasdaq-100 fut +0.3-0.4% · Brent ~$88 · WTI ~$82.12 · 10Y 4.73% · DXY ~99.84 · Gold ~$4,381.96 · Bitcoin ~$64,000

Datadog +11% · clawing back last Thursday's post-earnings craterMatters
Six sell-side price-target hikes (Citigroup, Scotiabank, Macquarie, Needham, Canaccord Genuity, Rosenblatt) lifted the average target toward ~$292 after Q2 revenue grew ~36% y/y and management pointed to 750+ AI-native customers. The stock had dropped ~17% last Thursday on concern one large AI customer was cutting usage. This is the portfolio's biggest one-day move today — and it's a radar name, so today's rally is exactly what pushed it out of its own buy zone (+4.4%).
Oil up a fourth straight session · Brent ~$88, WTI ~$82.12Matters
Driven by the second Houthi strike near Aramco's Jazan complex and collapsing Hormuz tanker traffic; European airline stocks (IAG, Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, Wizz Air, Ryanair) fell 1.5-2.1% after IATA cut its 2026 industry profit outlook on fuel costs. This is the session's real driver — it's feeding directly into the bond move below, not sitting off to the side as a separate story.
10-year Treasury yield 4.73% · near its highest since JanuaryMatters
Yields climbed as oil-driven inflation expectations firmed, a day ahead of the CPI print that will confirm or deny that read. Watch this level into tomorrow — a hot CPI on top of an already-rising yield is a harder combination for stocks than a hot CPI alone.
Gold -0.21% to $4,381.96 · Bitcoin ~$64,000, down from Friday's ~$65,100Diverging
Both pulled back even as the broader tone stayed risk-off — read as profit-taking after gold's recent rally and continued de-risking in crypto, not a reversal of the safe-haven bid. Neither move contradicts today's story; both are consistent with investors squaring positions ahead of CPI.

Ignore This Noise filter

Bending Spoons' 15.7% pre-earnings pop. The stock is rallying purely on positioning ahead of its Q2 report Thursday — it isn't an Alpha 100 name, and a speculative run into an unreleased print is exactly the kind of move that reverses hard on any miss. There's no thesis here to chase, only a headline.

So: if it's in your feed today, treat it as noise — it has no connection to anything on this session's radar or in tomorrow's CPI setup.
