The Daily Brief

EDITION 011MON 10 AUG 2026 · 12:45 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Don't chase Friday's rally. Don't fight Wednesday's CPI either.

Friday's jobs report showed the US economy lost 23,000 payrolls in July against a forecast +80,000 gain, with May and June revised down by a combined ~103,000 — the worst miss of the year. Fed-hike fear that had spiked toward 82% mid-week collapsed; CME's FedWatch now shows only ~40% odds of a September hike, Kalshi ~35%, down from ~54-56% before the print. Stocks ripped to fresh records into the weekend (S&P 500 +3.6% and Nasdaq +5.2% on the week, the best week since mid-April) and gold jumped 2.1% to $4,342 as the dollar slid to a two-month low. Monday's premarket is quiet — futures barely moved — because the real verdict on all of this lands Wednesday: July CPI. The Buy Zone Radar narrowed to 5 names (from 6 Thursday) as TSM and LLY climbed back above their zones and Novo Nordisk entered fresh; AMD is still stuck in BROKE ZONE, unchanged from last week.

Big Picture Regime Changed

The risk tone shifted hard this week without the site's editorial regime label moving yet: Friday's payrolls miss did more damage to the September-hike case than anything since the print sequence began, sending the S&P and Nasdaq to record closes on their best week since April while gold and a weaker dollar confirm the same story from the safety side. Oil is the one dissenting signal — Brent has now risen three straight sessions to ~$84.18 and WTI to ~$79.30 purely on unresolved Strait of Hormuz talks (Iran says a deal with Oman is "close" but won't reopen the strait until the US "corrects its behavior"), decoupled from the softer-yields, softer-dollar trade everywhere else.

What it means: one soft jobs print doesn't retire a hike case the Fed has been building on inflation, not employment — Wednesday's CPI (consensus headline +0.2% m/m / +2.8% y/y, core +0.2-0.3% m/m / ~3% y/y) is the actual referee. A hot core number reopens the hike debate Friday just closed; a soft one confirms it.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Fed-hike odds cratered on the jobs missReversal
CME's FedWatch tool shows September-hike odds near 40% and Kalshi near 35%, down from the 54-56% baseline and well off the ~82% spike some trackers showed mid-week. That's the single biggest driver of Friday's record close — but it's a jobs-data reprieve, not an inflation verdict, and it can reverse Wednesday just as fast as it appeared Friday.
NOW · Buy Zone Radar narrows to 5, with real rotation underneathRotating
TSM and LLY both climbed back above their 50-day zones since Thursday (TSM is now AT ZONE · downswing, LLY is BUY ≤ $1,158, both no longer BUY NOW); Novo Nordisk entered fresh in their place. AMAT, EOG, GS and ASML held their zones. The radar isn't static — a name leaving "in zone" on a rally is exactly the discipline working, not a signal to chase it higher.
NOW · Gold and the dollar are telling the same story as bonds — oil isn'tDiverging
Gold is up 2.1% to $4,342/oz and the dollar index slid to a two-month low near 99.5 as investors priced in a less-hawkish Fed; the 10-year is steady at 4.65%. Oil, meanwhile, is up a third straight session on Hormuz uncertainty alone. Judge the softer-dollar, softer-yields move as the real read on Friday's data — oil's move is a separate, geopolitical story, not a rates one.
NEXT · Tuesday's AI-infrastructure earnings reopen last week's "beat, get sold" questionCatalyst
Super Micro Computer and CoreWeave both report after Tuesday's close, followed by Cisco Wednesday and Applied Materials — currently the top name on today's radar — Thursday. Last week's pattern was margin and guidance overriding the headline beat for AMD and SanDisk; watch whether that pattern holds for the AI-capex names or breaks.
NEXT · Wednesday's CPI is the actual referee for Friday's rallyCatalyst
July CPI lands Wednesday at 13:30 Dublin, with core consensus running 0.2-0.3% m/m — hot enough on the high end that a beat could revive the hike case Friday's jobs miss just buried. Don't treat Friday's record close as settled until this prints — it's the more decisive number of the two.

Movers & Why Friday's close + Monday's premarket

Fri close: Dow +0.28% (+151.83pts) → 54,036.93 · S&P +0.62% → 7,757.64 (record) · Nasdaq +1.3% → 26,690.62 · Week: S&P +3.6%, Nasdaq +5.2% (best since mid-April) · Mon premarket: Dow fut -0.05% · Nasdaq-100 fut +0.15% · Brent ~$84.18 · WTI ~$79.30 · 10Y ~4.65% · DXY ~99.54 · Gold ~$4,342 · Bitcoin ~$65,100

July payrolls · -23,000 vs +80,000 expectedMatters
The worst jobs miss of the cycle, with May and June revised down a combined ~103,000; unemployment ticked down to 4.1% from 4.2% but only because participation fell, not because hiring strengthened, and wage growth slowed to 3.2% y/y, the lowest since May 2021. This is the print behind every other move in today's brief — read it as labor-market cooling, not labor-market collapse.
Gold +2.1% to $4,342 · Dollar index -0.39% to ~99.5Matters
Gold's highest close since late July as bond yields and the dollar eased together on the weaker Fed-hike outlook; the dollar touched a fresh two-month low intraday. This pair is the cleanest confirmation that Friday's move was a genuine repricing, not just an equity-index headline.
Oil (Brent $84.18 / WTI $79.30) · third straight session of gainsMatters
Climbing purely on unresolved Strait of Hormuz talks — Iran says a deal with Oman is close but won't reopen the strait until the US "corrects its behavior." Chevron (-1.49% premarket) fell anyway despite the crude strength, a reminder that individual energy names aren't trading in lockstep with the headline barrel price this morning.
Premarket leaders/laggards: Salesforce, Nvidia, Honeywell up; Visa, Chevron, Caterpillar downNoise
Salesforce +2.47%, Nvidia +2.33% and Honeywell +2.28% led; Visa -2.20%, Chevron -1.49% and Caterpillar -1.46% lagged. No single catalyst ties the list together — read this as post-rally rotation and positioning into a heavy earnings week, not a new theme.

Ignore This Noise filter

Headlines framing Friday's jobs miss as proof the September hike is dead. The Fed's case for hiking has been built on inflation running hot, not on labor-market strength — a single weak payrolls print with a falling participation rate doesn't settle that debate, and Wednesday's CPI is the number that actually does. Prediction-market odds already show that split forming: down sharply from mid-week, but still a real 35-40% chance of a hike, not a dead one.

So: treat Friday's rally as a reprieve priced on jobs data, not a verdict on inflation — don't extrapolate it past Wednesday morning.
