The Daily Brief

EDITION 009WED 05 AUG 2026 · 12:45 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Don't chase AMD's beat. Don't panic SpaceX's capex either.

AMD beat on revenue and EPS Tuesday, raised its Q3 guide to ~$13B (above the ~$12.52B Street estimate), and closed the regular session +7% at $518.58 — then fell 8.8% after hours to $472.94 anyway, punished for a gross margin miss (54% vs. 56% consensus) tied to Helios AI-rack ramp costs. SpaceX told nearly the same story in its first report since going public: revenue +92% YoY to $7.8B beat estimates and the loss narrowed sharply, but capex of $18.4B ran ~$5B over the Street's forecast, reversing an intraday +9.4% gain into an 8.6% after-hours slide. Uber missed in the other direction — an in-line quarter but a soft Q3 guide sent it down ~3.5% this morning. One consequence for us directly: AMD sits in today's Buy Zone Radar as "BUY NOW," but that level is priced off last night's pre-drop close — don't treat it as live until the open re-prices it. SanDisk closes the earnings gauntlet after tonight's close.

Big Picture Regime Unchanged

Still risk-off, and the signals are pulling in genuinely different directions today. September hike odds on CME FedWatch have rocketed to ~82% — up from roughly 53% just a week ago, the sharpest repricing of this cycle — even as the S&P 500 and Dow closed at fresh record highs Tuesday (S&P +1.79% to 7,737, Dow +1.71% to 54,086, Nasdaq +2.59% to 26,585) on the earnings beats and Hormuz de-escalation hopes. At the same time, gold and silver both caught a fresh safe-haven bid Wednesday morning — gold +1.8% to ~$4,228/oz, silver +2.6% to ~$61.81/oz — on renewed Red Sea tension tied to Houthi attacks on Saudi-linked oil tankers. Equities, rates and metals are not telling the same story this morning.

What it means: with three FOMC dissenters already on record wanting to hike and the odds now near five-in-six, the bar for a genuinely dovish surprise keeps rising — the earnings beats are real, but so is the rate risk sitting underneath them. Gold's bid is the tell to watch if equities keep shrugging it off.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · "Beat the number, get sold anyway" is a pattern now, not a one-offRepeating
AMD and SpaceX both beat Tuesday and both fell after hours anyway — AMD on a gross-margin miss from Helios ramp costs, SpaceX on capex running ~50% above forecast. It's the same script Amazon and Apple ran in Edition 007. Three straight earnings cycles now: a strong print isn't enough on its own if the capex line grows faster than the revenue line.
NOW · September hike odds triple in a week even as stocks hit recordsHot
CME FedWatch-implied odds of a September hike jumped from ~53% to ~82% in roughly a week — the sharpest repricing of the cycle — while the S&P and Dow simultaneously posted record closes. The rates market and the equity market are telling two different stories about the same economy; earnings season is the only thing propping up the equity side for now.
NOW · Gold and silver catch a fresh bid on renewed Red Sea tensionDiverging
Gold rose ~1.8% and silver ~2.6% Wednesday morning on reports of a fresh Houthi attack on a Saudi-linked oil tanker, even as Monday's Hormuz de-escalation optimism is still driving the broader equity and oil tape. A safe-haven bid alongside a risk-on equity tape is a genuine divergence — it usually resolves in the safe-haven's favor, not the other way round.
NEXT · SanDisk closes the earnings gauntlet after tonight's closeCatalyst
SanDisk reports fiscal Q4/FY2026 after the bell (call at 21:30 Dublin), with the Street's highest price target at $3,050 and Goldman Sachs just raising its own target to $2,200 from $1,200 on tight NAND supply. If SanDisk beats and still gets sold like AMD and SpaceX did, the "punish the capex, not the revenue" pattern extends into memory — a real regime read, not a one-name story.
NEXT · Nonfarm payrolls Friday is the week's actual verdictCatalyst
Friday's jobs report is the single highest-impact release of the week, landing directly into a Fed debate the market has already re-priced sharply hawkish. A strong print cements the September hike case already being priced; a weak one reopens an argument that oil and Hormuz headlines can't settle on their own.

Movers & Why Tuesday's close + Wednesday's earnings wave

Tue close: Dow +1.71% (+907pts) → 54,086 (record) · S&P +1.79% → 7,737 (record) · Nasdaq +2.59% → 26,585 · Brent ~$80.37 · WTI ~$76.01 · 10Y ~4.63% · DXY ~99.92 · Bitcoin ~$64,016

AMD · +7% close, then -8.8% after hours to $472.94Matters
Q2 revenue $11.54B and EPS $1.66 both beat estimates, data-center revenue jumped 107% YoY to $6.7B (58% of sales), and the Q3 guide of ~$13B topped the ~$12.52B Street consensus — but a 54% gross margin (vs. 56% consensus) tied to Helios rack-ramp costs sent the stock sliding after the bell. Today's Buy Zone Radar entry for AMD is priced off the pre-drop close — don't buy it until the open re-rates the stock.
SpaceX (SPCX) · +9.4% intraday reversed to -8.6% after hoursMatters
In its first report since going public, SpaceX beat on revenue ($7.8B, +92% YoY) and posted a narrower-than-expected loss, but capex of $18.4B ran ~$5B above the ~$13B Street forecast. Same story as AMD — the market is pricing AI-infrastructure spending as a cost right now, not a growth story, regardless of the headline beat.
Uber · -3.5% this morningMatters
Q2 was in line (EPS $0.81 vs. $0.81 est., gross bookings above guide at $58B+, +22% YoY) but the Q3 bookings and earnings guide trailed estimates. Uber isn't on today's radar — its own thesis (a reclaim of $79) is unaffected — but the guide miss fits the same "the forward number matters more than the beat" theme running through the whole session.
Disney · +4% premarketMatters
Fiscal Q3 EPS of $2.06 beat the $1.86 estimate on 11% streaming revenue growth to $5.53B, and Disney raised its FY26 buyback target to at least $9B. The one earnings beat the market is actually rewarding today has no AI-capex line attached to it — a tell for what's really driving today's other selloffs.

Ignore This Noise filter

Headlines framing SpaceX's 8.6% after-hours drop as proof the AI trade is cracking. SpaceX beat revenue by over $1B and narrowed its loss — the selloff is about one quarter's capex line running ~$5B over forecast, not about demand. AMD's data-center revenue was up 107% year-over-year in the same 24 hours, and our own radar still shows 10 names in zone across chips, power and energy.

So: judge each name's guide and margin on its own terms — a single capex overshoot at one company isn't the same signal as the memory-cycle unwind from three weeks ago.
