The Daily Brief

EDITION 005WED 29 JUL 2026 · 13:00 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
Don't front-run the Fed. Don't front-run Big Tech either.

Two verdicts land tonight, roughly two hours apart: the FOMC rate decision at 19:00 Dublin, then Microsoft and Meta report after the US close. Futures are barely moving — S&P +0.2%, Nasdaq-100 +0.3%, Dow −0.2% — because nothing priced this morning survives either event. Oil just reversed back up over 3% on fresh Iran–US friction, the same kind of move that's pushed CME's hike odds from 10.7% to 38% in two weeks. And MSFT/META both carry ~95% "beat" odds already priced in — the real risk is the same capex trap that cost GOOGL −7.4% and TSLA −14.5% two weeks ago on good numbers. Nothing here is worth a new position before 21:00.

Big Picture Regime Pivotal

Still risk-off, and today decides whether it deepens or eases. Oil snapped back Brent +3.2% to ~$86.80, WTI +3.4% to ~$81.95 overnight as the fragile US–Iran pause looked shakier — Trump has said strikes resume without a real deal, and fewer than 10 commercial vessels a day are transiting the Strait of Hormuz versus roughly 100 before the war. That's the same inflation input that's driven the Fed's hike odds from 10.7% two weeks ago to 38% today (CME FedWatch, hold priced at 62%). Separately, the chip complex is sliding toward a real correction: the Nasdaq-100 is off ~1.8% intraday and nearing 10% down from its high, with SOXX down 12.9% over the last two sessions.

What it means: the Fed's decision (19:00) and Warsh's tone on energy-driven inflation (19:30 press conference) come first; Microsoft and Meta's capex guidance comes second. Either one alone could move the tape more than anything that's happened all week — don't pre-position for both.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · Oil's relief rally is unwinding, fastReversing
Brent and WTI both jumped 3%+ overnight, giving back most of Monday-Tuesday's ceasefire-driven slide, as the US-Iran pause looks fragile and Hormuz shipping traffic stays near a standstill. Every dollar oil regains is a dollar of pressure back on tonight's Fed decision.
NOW · The chip selloff is nearing a correctionCracking
Micron fell nearly 10% and AMD ~8% on Tuesday, Broadcom −1.7%; the Philadelphia semiconductor complex (SOXX) is down 12.9% over two sessions and the Nasdaq-100 is edging toward a 10% correction from its high. This is the same AI-capex skepticism MSFT and META have to answer tonight — it hasn't eased at all.
NOW · Dow money is rotating into cyclicals and valueSplit tape
The Dow added 537 points (+1.03%) Tuesday even as the Nasdaq Composite slipped −0.22% — a genuinely split market, not a single directional signal. Read it as capital leaving the most crowded AI names, not capital leaving equities.
NEXT · The FOMC binary, with oil pushing the wrong wayCatalyst
Decision at 19:00 Dublin, Warsh press conference at 19:30. CME FedWatch has hold at 62% and hike at 38% today — up from just 10.7% two weeks ago, entirely a function of oil and May's 4.2% YoY CPI print. A genuine two-way outcome tonight, not a formality.
NEXT · Microsoft and Meta answer the capex question, tonightCatalyst
Both report after the close. Consensus has MSFT EPS $4.24 (+16% YoY) on $87.62B revenue (+15%); META EPS $7.18 on $60.22B revenue (+27%) — both with ~95% beat odds already priced in. FY27 capex guidance (MSFT toward ~$190B, META's FY26 spend already raised to $136.7B) is what actually moves the stock, the same trap that hit GOOGL and TSLA two weeks ago.

Movers & Why Tuesday's close + Wednesday premarket

Tue close: Dow +537pts (+1.03%) → 52,747.32 · S&P +0.21% → 7,428.78 · Nasdaq Composite −0.22% → 24,876.91 · Premarket: S&P fut +0.2% · Nasdaq-100 fut +0.3% · Dow fut −0.2% · Brent ~$86.80 (+3.2%) · WTI ~$81.95 (+3.4%) · 10Y ~4.64% · DXY ~101.3 · Bitcoin ~$63,900

Chip complex (MU, AMD, AVGO) · SOXX −12.9% over two sessionsMatters
Micron fell nearly 10% Tuesday, AMD ~8%, Broadcom −1.7%, as investors keep reassessing the AI-capex cycle ahead of Big Tech earnings. This is the trade the whole Nasdaq is riding on right now — and it's the exact question MSFT and META must answer tonight.
Brent & WTI crude · +3.2% / +3.4% overnightMatters
Reversing Monday-Tuesday's ceasefire-driven dip as the US-Iran pause looks shakier and Strait of Hormuz shipping traffic stays near a standstill (fewer than 10 vessels/day vs. ~100 normally). Feeds directly into tonight's Fed call — it's the single biggest swing factor in the hike-odds repricing.
Dow · +537 points (+1.03%) TuesdayMixed
Cyclicals and value caught a bid as money rotated out of richly-priced AI chip names, even as the Nasdaq Composite slipped. A split tape, not a broad risk-on signal — don't read it as an all-clear for growth names.
US Dollar Index · holding ~101.2–101.3Watch
Subdued near a one-month high as traders wait out the Fed rather than take a position either way. A decisive break either direction after 19:00 is the cleanest read on how the market actually judges the decision.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

Pelosi bought Nvidia and sold Microsoft three days before Microsoft's printFresh · 3 days old
A financial disclosure filed this week shows Nancy Pelosi bought $1M–$5M of Nvidia (10,000 shares) and sold $1M–$5M of Microsoft (5,000 shares), both on 26 July — days ahead of tonight's MSFT earnings. Not a trading signal on its own, but notable timing given the exact stock reporting tonight; existing holdings like this would survive any future trading ban untouched regardless.
The congressional stock-trading ban has stalled in the SenateFresh · this week
After the House passed its Stop Insider Trading Act 232–198 (Pelosi voting no), a push for a quick Senate floor vote collapsed this week after Republicans attached a voter-ID provision, reigniting a partisan fight. The bill is unlikely to clear the Senate's 60-vote threshold as written — disclosure-based trade-copying strategies keep their main data source for now.
Tech-sector insider buying still sits at a record paceOngoing · trailing 6 months
28 executives across the XLK technology-sector ETF's constituents have bought shares on the open market over the past six months — still the highest count on record for the group, unchanged from last week's read. A sector-wide conviction signal, not name-specific to anything reporting tonight.

Ignore This Noise filter

The 79%-hold / 20%-hike numbers some retail prediction markets are citing today. Those figures are running well behind the professional gauge — CME FedWatch, built on real Fed funds futures pricing, has hold at 62% and hike at 38% as of this morning, a spread that's moved fast over the last two weeks as oil climbed. A slower-moving retail market isn't a more optimistic read; it's a stale one.

So: size tonight's position, if any, off CME FedWatch's 38% hike odds, not off whichever prediction-market number is easiest to find in a headline.
