The Daily Brief

EDITION 004MON 27 JUL 2026 · 13:00 DUBLINREGIME: RISK-OFF
Today's Move
The war paused. The wait-for-Wednesday trade didn't.

Futures are ripping this morning — Dow futures +1%, S&P +0.9%, Nasdaq-100 +1.4% — after the US and Iran quietly paused a 13-day exchange of strikes over the weekend. Brent crude fell as much as 7.4% to below $90 (from over $100 a week ago) on hopes the cease-fire holds, and the dollar has pulled back from Thursday's one-month high near 101.5 as the war-premium bid unwinds. That's a real, tradeable relief valve — but nothing about Wednesday's Fed decision or the MSFT/META/AAPL/AMZN capex verdicts changed over the weekend. A 48-hour pause between two sides that were shooting at each other on Friday doesn't undo four straight days of "beat and get punished anyway." Take the bounce in names already in zone if it fits your plan; don't mistake a cease-fire for an all-clear.

Big Picture Regime Easing

Still nominally risk-off, but the inputs eased over the weekend for the first time in two weeks. The US has held off further strikes on Iran since late Friday, and Tehran's army says it has suspended its responses too — Brent's ~7% slide back under $90 is the market pricing that as real, at least for now. The dollar index has slipped to roughly 101.2–101.3 from Thursday's one-month high of 101.5, and the 10-year, which touched an 18-month high near 4.69% this week on the war premium, is the number to watch next: a genuine reversal there is the tell that this isn't just a weekend pause. Fed-hike odds for Wednesday sat at roughly 38% hike / 61% hold as of Friday — before this weekend's de-escalation — so there's real room for that number to soften into the meeting if the cease-fire holds through Tuesday.

What it means: this is relief, not resolution. A Houthi claim of a fresh strike on Saudi Aramco facilities over the weekend (unconfirmed by Riyadh) is a reminder the region is one incident from snapping back. Judge Wednesday's Fed statement and the hyperscaler capex commentary on their own terms — the oil story helps the macro backdrop but doesn't answer either question.

Trends: Now & Next Where the money is going

NOW · The war premium is deflatingEasing
Brent fell as much as 7.4% intraday to below $90 after the US paused its 13-day strike campaign against Iran and Tehran suspended its own responses late Friday. Oil is still up over 50% year-to-date on the broader Middle East disruption, so this is a partial unwind, not a round trip. Every dollar oil gives back is a dollar of pressure off Wednesday's Fed decision.
NOW · AI-capex skepticism is still the load-bearing storyCracking
Last week's verdict — GOOGL −7.4% and TSLA −14.5% on capex/margin, INTC's pop fully round-tripped — hasn't been revisited by anything over the weekend. Investors are underwriting free-cash-flow, not revenue growth, into a week where MSFT, META, AAPL and AMZN all have to answer the same question. A calmer oil tape doesn't reopen that argument in Big Tech's favor.
NOW · Chips clawing back Friday's memory-sector selloffWatch
Nvidia, Intel, AMD, Micron and SanDisk are all higher in premarket trading, recovering part of Friday's Seoul-led sympathy selloff — Intel and AMD each up more than 2%, Nvidia near +1%. A bounce inside a crowded trade, not yet a chart confirmation — treat it as relief, same as the oil move.
NEXT · The FOMC binary, now with a lighter oil thumb on the scaleCatalyst
Wednesday 29 July, 2pm ET / 7pm Dublin. As of Friday, CME FedWatch had hold at ~61% and hike at ~38% (up from ~12% a week earlier) — entirely a function of oil topping $100. If the cease-fire holds through Tuesday, expect that hike probability to soften into the print; if it breaks, expect it to spike right back.
NEXT · Four capex verdicts, 48 hours apartCatalyst
MSFT and META report Wednesday after the Fed decision; AAPL and AMZN follow Thursday. All four face the same question GOOGL and TSLA just answered badly. Nothing that happened this weekend changes what the market is grading them on.

Movers & Why Monday premarket, ahead of the open

Futures: Dow +1.0% · S&P 500 +0.9% · Nasdaq-100 +1.4% · Russell 2000 +1.3% · Brent crude ~$88–90 (−7.4% intraday) · 10Y ~4.67% · DXY ~101.2 · Bitcoin ~$65,300

Brent & WTI crude · −7.4% intraday → sub-$90Matters
The US paused strikes on Iran late Friday after a 13-day campaign; Iran's army says it has suspended its responses. The single biggest driver of this morning's tape — it's the reason yields, the dollar and Fed-hike odds are all easing at once.
Chip complex (NVDA, INTC, AMD, MU, SNDK) · premarket +1% to +2%+Mixed
Recovering part of Friday's Seoul-led memory-sector selloff as risk appetite returns broadly. Read it as beta to the relief rally, not a fresh signal on the sector's own fundamentals.
argenx (ARGX) → Forte Biosciences (FBRX) · $2.2B all-cash dealNoise
Argenx will pay $77/share (~86% premium) for Forte Biosciences, adding an anti-CD122 antibody to its immunology pipeline; deal expected to close Q3. Neither name is in the Alpha 100 — flagged only as more evidence risk appetite is broadly back this morning, not a name to act on here.
US Dollar Index · pulling back from a one-month high (~101.5 → ~101.2)Watch
The dollar's rally this month was built on the same war-premium and hike-odds inputs now easing. A further slide here is the cleanest single confirmation that markets believe the cease-fire, more than any equity move.

Smart Money Who's actually buying

Bridgewater rotated hard into the chip names now sitting in our zoneLagged · one quarter old
Bridgewater's Q1 2026 13F (filed mid-May) showed a major portfolio rotation into Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron and TSMC, while exiting software names like Salesforce. Two of those four — NVDA and AVGO — are sitting in our Buy Zone Radar below; the filing is a quarter old, but the direction (hardware over software) has held up since.
A large, less-cited hedge is running the other way on the same namesLagged · one quarter old
Situational Awareness LP disclosed $8.46B in AI-chip put options for Q1 2026, covering Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, ASML, TSMC, Micron, Intel and Oracle. Smart money is split on the exact names we're flagging as in-zone buys — worth sizing positions knowing sophisticated players are hedged against the same trade.
Corporate insiders are buying their own tech stock at a record clipFresh · trailing 6 months
28 executives across the XLK technology-sector ETF's constituents have bought shares on the open market over the past six months — the highest count on record for the group. A genuine floor-level signal of conviction, though it's a sector-wide count, not name-specific to anything in our zone.
Congressional stock-trading ban passed the HouseFresh · 5 days old
The House passed a ban on members and immediate family trading individual stocks, 232–198, on 22 July. Nancy Pelosi voted no despite having publicly endorsed the ban ahead of the vote. Not a trading signal, but a regulatory shift worth tracking — it still needs the Senate, and disclosure-based trade-copying strategies would lose their main data source if it clears.

Ignore This Noise filter

"The Middle East war is over" headlines. A 13-day strike campaign pausing over a weekend is genuine relief, but it's a pause, not a peace deal — the US hasn't withdrawn anything and Iran has only "suspended" its responses, both reversible by tomorrow morning. A Houthi claim of a fresh strike on Saudi Aramco facilities over the weekend (unconfirmed by Riyadh) is exactly the kind of incident that could snap the whole thing back.

So: trade the relief the market is actually pricing (lower oil, softer dollar, calmer chips) — don't extrapolate it into a durable regime change. One quiet weekend doesn't undo a 50%-plus year-to-date move in crude.
